ABOUT
Founded by former chess prodigy Gauri Manoj, a longtime Glenview resident, Glenview Chess is a company that is dedicated to promoting the benefits of chess to children in the Glenview community and beyond. Over the last ten years, Gauri has taught chess to over one thousand students across many schools.
Why chess? Chess will help map your child’s brain for math and science by teaching how to break problems down into steps, solve puzzles and win games! Chess also teaches logic and planning and how to peacefully resolve disputes. Psychologist Howard Gardner says “The ability to anticipate chess moves and their consequences seems closely tied to strong imagery" and that good chess players have good spatial intelligence. He states that spatial intelligence (one of his eight intelligences that children need to develop) is critical for today’s environment because it is the basis of creativity in the working world.
Our classes emphasize learning thru game play and solving puzzles. There is no chance in chess. Each game is really a series of interactive puzzles created by the players, one move at a time. With practice, your child will learn the rules and tactics. This body of knowledge and experience will grow and soon result in multi-move strategies that win games. The player who can calculate the logical progression of moves furthest forward always wins! Kids will be rewarded (with various sized trophies) based on the amount of points earned thru work at home playing games, solving puzzles, and on tournament play in class. We reward hard work! With your help, your child can reap the vast rewards chess has to offer!
